by USA Swimming
Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Sun Devil Swimming) broke an additional TYR Pro Swim Series record on the final night of the Westmont stop, concluding the four-day meet. In addition to the 200m backstroke this evening, Smith broke a U.S. Open record in the 100m backstroke and another TYR Pro Swim Series record in the 200m butterfly earlier this week. Torri Huske (Arlington, Va./Arlington Aquatic Club) added two TYR Pro Swim Series records in the 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly.
Women’s 1500m Freestyle – FINAL

2 – Beatriz Pimentel Dizotti (BRA), 16:30.86
3 – Leticia Fassina (BRA), 16:39.03
Madden on her training: “I think this is pretty good. It’s a good check-in meet. I had strep a couple weeks ago, so I had to take a few days off because of that. It’s just good to see where we are at right before we go up to high-altitude camp next week.”
Men’s 1500m Freestyle – FINAL
1 – Michael Brinegar (Columbus, Ind./The Swim Team), 15:09.72
2 – Luke Whitlock (Noblesville, Ind./Fishers Area Swimming Tigers), 15:12.46
3 – David Johnston (Dallas, Texas/The Swim Team), 15:20.59
Brinegar on his race: “I just had the best race of my week, so I am pretty happy about that. Training is going pretty well—I just came off some really hard weeks.”
Women’s 200m Individual Medley – FINAL
1 – Torri Huske (Arlington, Va./Arlington Aquatic Club), 2:08.83
2 – Leah Hayes (Sugar Grove, Ill./Fox Valley Park District Riptides), 2:10.62
3 – Beata Nelson (Madison, Wis./Wisconsin Aquatic Club), 2:12.49
Huske on her race: “I’m very rarely surprised by a swim. Usually, I know how I am going to go about things, and I expect a lot of myself, but I was a little surprised with that swim. I just really wanted to work the backstroke because I feel like that’s really where I typically lose ground. It’s really difficult for me to find that sweet spot where I can go fast and have it not feel difficult, and I think I am still working on finding that. I’m glad I was able to find that this meet.”
Men’s 200m Individual Medley – FINAL
T-1 – Chase Kalisz (Baltimore, Md./Sun Devil Swimming), 1:57.76
T-1 – Hugo Gonzalez de Oliviera (ESP), 1:57.76
3 – Kieran Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Sun Devil Swimming), 1:59.52
Kalisz on his swim: “The 2(00) IM tonight was really smooth for me. Usually, I just struggle through the front of these IM races and then just kind of pray for breaststroke. I’m happy with being able to get out and definitely feeling it. Everything so far so good.”
Women’s 200m Backstroke– FINAL
1 – Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Sun Devil Swimming), 2:03.99*
2 – Rhyan White (Herriman, Utah/Wolfpack Elite), 2:07.38
3 – Leah Shackley (Bedford, Penn./Blair Regional YMCA), 2:08.87

Smith on her backstroke tempo: “Sometimes I can overthink my races and it can prevent me from executing, so I have been trying to focus on details during the race instead of thinking about how much it hurts. When it starts to hurt, I just go to tempo and I just repeat tempo over and over in my head. That helps me, distracts me from the pain, and keeps me focused on what is important.”
Men’s 200m Backstroke – FINAL
1 – Ryan Murphy (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./California Aquatics), 1:58.34
2 – Yeziel Morales (PRI), 1:58.93
3 – Jay Litherland (Alpharetta, Ga./Sun Devil Swimming), 1:59.64
Murphy on winning from lane eight: “I think we’ve got to sharpen that (event) up a lot – definitely race rusty there. I’ll work on it and do better.”
Women’s 100m Freestyle – FINAL
1 – Simone Manuel (Sugar Land, Texas/Sun Devil Swimming), 53.35
2 – Torri Huske (Arlington, Va./Arlington Aquatic Club), 53.39
3 – Abbey Weitzeil (Santa Clarita, Calif./California Aquatics), 53.95
Manuel on executing her race: “The second 50 hurt a little bit more than I wanted it to so we have to work on that, but I went out fast like I wanted to. I think when I conserve too much, it’s not very good for my second 50. So just figuring out ways to get better.”
Men’s 100m Freestyle – FINAL
1 – Jack Alexy (Mendham, N.J./California Aquatics), 48.37
2 – Caeleb Dressel (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Gator Swim Club), 48.57
3 – Ryan Held (Springfield, Ill./New York Athletic Club), 48.66
Alexy on his win: “I saw Caeleb (Dressel) coming in the end there. I was pretty tired, but its really fun racing him and the rest of the field. I think this meet is a pretty good indicator of where everyone’s at this season, and I’m happy with the time and results.”
